"Come, follow Me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men."
Matthew 4:19
Let's Go Holoholo!
Aloha kakou! Holoholo is the Hawaiian slang term for going fishing. In the islands, we invite everyone by saying, "Shoots! We go holoholo!" So when Jesus calls us to become fishers of men, it is His invitation to go holoholo. Young, old, from every race and tongue, we are called to go out into the world and make disciples of every nation!
Our History
Founded in 2000 under the covering of Youth With a Mission (YWAM), Holoholo Ministries is committed to raising up the locals of Hawaii and the world to be all Christ has created them to be. We sponsor a number of events on the Big island of Hawaii and are active in reaching out to serve the people of Kailua-Kona. Our community outreach activities include Deep & Beyond, coaching high school football and soccer, hosting indoor soccer tournaments, volunteering for local charities such as the Ironman Triathlon, and tutoring high schoolers. In addition to serving Kona, we run yearly Discipleship Training Schools at YWAM Ships Kona, inviting our students into the local ministry we do on island, as well as taking them overseas to areas such as the Philippines and Thailand. Holoholo Ministries embodies both Hawaiian culture and the YWAM Values, to point towards the transformational love of Jesus Christ. Our Founders and Directors: Paul and Doreen Chinen
In 1993, Paul and Doreen, both originally from Honolulu, Hawaii, moved with their family to Kona for a Crossroads DTS at the University of the Nations. After CDTS, Paul completed the School of Biblical Studies (SBS), while Doreen worked as a teacher at the University of the Nations Pre-school. They worked with Island Breeze Ministries from 1994-96, and helped pioneer the CDTS in Bagio, Philippines before returning to Kona to staff DTS’s at the UofN. In 2000, the Chinen’s attended the Leadership Training School (LTS) in New Zealand, where they laid the foundational groundwork to pioneer the Hawaiian Islands Holoholo DTS, which began in January 2001. Their family has traveled throughout Hawaii, to the Olympic games in Atlanta, Canada, the Philippines, Okinawa, Thailand, New Zealand, Korea, Fiji Islands, Samoa, and American Samoa. In 2004 Doreen did her Introduction to Biblical Counseling (IBC) and Addictive Behavior Counseling (ABC) Courses in 2007 both in Kona Hawaii. She also teaches Plumbline in Holoholo DTS’s. Paul and Doreen are very active in the community, coaching soccer and football. Paul enjoys spending time with the family, sports, paddling, and watching movies. Doreen is a professional dancer, choreographer, and the queen of hospitality and party planning. They have five children, some of which have been involved in YWAM and all of which are an essential part of our Holoholo family.
